Five Ways to Save...
At the Drugstore
by Stephanie Nelson
1. Check Circulars. This is your first stop for savings. All drugstores feature sale items, buy one, get one free offers, rebate notices or other promotions in their weekly circular. Circulars are available in the store, in the mail, online, or in the Sunday paper and include store coupons.
2. Use Store Coupons. Drugstores issue their own coupons for both store brand and name brand items. The magic of store coupons is that you can combine them with manufacturers’ coupons if there are any for that item. If so, you can use both coupons on the purchase of a single qualifying item and increase your chance of getting it free.
3. BOGO. The buy one, get one (BOGO) coupon combo is where savings begin to pile up. The chains usually offer many BOGO free or BOGO 50% off and if you have coupons, you start trading into freebie country. Unlike grocery stores, drugstores’ BOGO offers generally require shoppers to purchase two items.
4. Send in those rebates. Some shoppers are turned off by the idea of rebates, finding them too time-consuming. I’m not one of them. Time is money and saving money is always worth my time. Drugstores now have automatic rebates that print on your receipt, so you don’t even have to mail in paperwork. Walgreens and Rite Aid still have mail-in rebates but their process is streamlined, making it easy to send all rebates for one month in at once, or you can even file Rite Aid rebates online.
5. Trial sizes. Small containers can be the bane of the budget shopper since their unit cost is usually higher. With coupons, however, you can get them for free much of the time. Ensure that the coupon specifies any size. I had two $1 off coupons any size of a name brand deodorant. I knew the CVS in my area stocked a trial size of this deodorant. I used my two coupons on two sticks of deodorant and added them to my toiletry kit for free.
